This site has sections covering everything from scouting trips, to where to have your laundry done, to how to get health insurance. You don’t need to read it all at once or read it in order.
Feel free to read it in order, skip around, or click the link below that best fits where you are in your journey to get suggested sections most applicable to you right now.
Where are you in your journey?
- I’m curious, but have not decided anything yet
- I’ve decided to move, and I’m planning
- I just arrived in Piriápolis
- I’m ready to tackle residency and bureaucracy
- I’m not sure
I’m curious about Piriápolis, but have not decided anything yet.
Welcome! Start here:
- Choosing Your New Home — understand why people choose Uruguay and Piriápolis specifically, including an honest look at what it’s not.
- Choosing Where to Live in Piriápolis — get a feel for the town’s neighborhoods and character.
- Food Shopping and Arts and Activities — a taste of daily life.
- Medical Care and Health Insurance — healthcare is often a top concern for people considering a move, and Uruguay has excellent options.
Then, when you’re ready, join the conversation at Piriápolis, Uruguay Expats on Facebook. Ask questions. Read what others are going through. That community is one of your best research tools.
I’ve decided to move to Piriápolis. Now what?
Start with the practical:
- Preparing to Move — what to do before you leave, including documents, banking, pets, and what to bring.
- Transportation — how to get from the airport to Piriápolis.
- Choosing Where to Live — neighborhoods, short-term rentals, and how to find a real estate agent.
- Money, Banking, and Payments — how money and banking work here in Uruguay.
- Technology — apps to download and practical tools for daily life.
Don’t try to have everything sorted before you arrive. Come first, get oriented, and let the rest unfold. Many things are easier to figure out once you’re here.
I just arrived. What do I need to know right now?
Focus on getting settled:
- Choosing Where to Live — if you haven’t locked in longer-term housing yet, read this before committing to anything.
- Food Shopping — where to buy groceries, find the feria, and locate specialty items.
- Utilities — how to set up electricity, water, and Wi-Fi.
- Money, Banking, and Payments — ATMs, Abitab, and how to pay bills without a local bank account.
- Medical Care — where the local clinics are and how urgent care works.
- Other Services — laundry, haircuts, and the vet.
- Emergency Services — phone numbers and what to do in an emergency.
The most important thing right now is getting comfortable before you tackle some of the bigger tasks around finding a long-term place to live or applying for permanent residency. Meet people, explore the town, and give yourself time to adjust.
I’m ready to sort out residency and the bureaucracy.
You are ready to make it official! Work through these in roughly this order:
- Applying for Residency — understand your options, including the Digital Nomad Permit as a first step.
- Immigration Certificate & Re-entry Permit — when you need them and how to get them.
- Cédula / ID Card — how and when to get your Uruguayan ID.
- Health Insurance — especially the Monotributo section if you are over 60 or have pre-existing conditions.
- Registration of Birth, Marriage, and Other Certificates — required for permanent residency, but need not be completed until two years after your residency appointment.
- Driving in Uruguay — how to validate your foreign license or get a Uruguayan one.
A few things worth knowing before you start: bureaucracy in Uruguay moves slowly, appointments can be hard to get, and requirements sometimes change. Stay connected with the expat community and to other people’s recent experiences for a valuable real-time resource.
